What it does

Lens adds a chat side panel to Chrome. Open it on any page and ask an AI questions about what you're reading, get a summary, or work through ideas — with the current page's content already in context. It uses your choice of provider: Google (Gemini), OpenAI, or Anthropic. You supply your own API key, and Lens sends your questions directly to that provider using your key.

Why it exists

Most AI browser extensions route your data through an intermediary service — even ones that say "bring your own key" often still see your prompts, page content, or usage. Lens doesn't. Your data goes from your browser directly to the AI provider you chose. There's no Lens server, no Lens account, no telemetry. It's built for people who want AI help while browsing but prefer the data flow simple and inspectable.

How it works

Content extraction

When you open Lens on a page, it extracts the readable content — the article or document text — and makes it available to the AI alongside your questions. Extraction happens on your device, only when you invoke Lens.

Bring your own key

You add an API key from your chosen provider in Lens's settings. Lens stores the key locally in your browser using Chrome's storage APIs, and uses it to call the provider's API directly. You pay the provider for usage; you don't pay Lens. Getting a key takes a few minutes:

Getting started

1. Install Lens from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Get an API key from Google, OpenAI, or Anthropic (links above).
3. Right-click the Lens icon in Chrome's toolbar → Options, and add your key.
4. Open a web page you want to chat about.
5. Click the Lens icon or press Ctrl+Shift+L to open the side panel.
6. Ask a question, or use Summarize for a quick starting point.

What Lens doesn't do

Being clear about what Lens isn't matters as much as what it is:

• Lens is not a hosted service. There's no "Lens account."
• Lens doesn't use its own AI models — it uses the model you configure at the provider you choose.
• Lens doesn't collect analytics, telemetry, or crash reports.
• Lens doesn't sync across devices. Everything is per browser profile.
• Lens doesn't modify the pages you visit. It reads them; it doesn't inject UI or change content.
• Lens doesn't save conversations to a database. History lives per tab in the browser session.
